Brief Bio

Alicia Keys was born Alicia Augello Cook on January 25, 1981, in New York. Alicia started taking piano lessons at age 7, and eventually attended the Professional Performance Arts School in Manhattan, where she majored in choir. She excelled academically and graduated at the age of 16. She was accepted to Columbia University on a full scholarship, but left after only four weeks in order to devote herself fully to music.

During her high school years Alicia had already attracted the attention of record companies, and in 1998 she signed with Arista Records. In 1999 she followed Clive Davis, the head of Arista Records, who left the company to start J Records. There Alicia completed work on her debut album, “Songs in A Minor”, which was released in 2001 amongst a media blitz orchestrated by Davis. When it was released, the album went platinum five times over.
