Brief Bio

Bob Dylan was born Robert Allen Zimmerman on May 24, 1941, in Duluth, Minnesota. From a young age he took a strong interest in music, and at school he formed some of his first bands including the “Golden Chords” and “Elston Gunn and His Rock Boppers”.

While attending the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Dylan often performed folk and country songs at local cafés. In 1960 he dropped out of college and moved to New York, where he frequently performed in the folk clubs and coffeehouses of Greenwich Village. In 1961 Dylan signed a recording contract with Columbia Records, and in 1962 he released his first album “Bob Dylan”.

Dylan’s reputation grew rapidly over the next few years, as he released album after album of original, groundbreaking and poetic music. Somewhat against his will, he became known as the voice of his generation and as the definitive songwriter of the ’60s protest movement. His famous songs of the time included “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall.”

By 1964 Dylan was playing 200 concerts a year. The pace took its toll, and following a motorcycle accident in July 1966 he spent almost a year recovering in seclusion. He took up recording again however, and eventually in 1974 he began his first full-scale tour since his accident.

In the 1970′s Dylan achieved the No. 1 spot in the album charts three times, with “Planet Waves”, “Blood on the Tracks”, and “Desire”. This latter album included Dylan’s song “Hurricane,” about the boxer Rubin “Hurricane” Carter who was serving life in prison after being convicted of a triple murder in 1967. Dylan was one of many public figures who helped Carter’s cause, leading to a retrial in 1976.
