Brief Bio

John Mayer was born on October 16, 1977 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Having learned to play the guitar as a teenager, he briefly attended Boston’s Berklee College of Music but did not complete his studies. Moving to Atlanta, he played frequently in local clubs both solo and with a band.

In 1999 Mayer independently released his debut EP, Inside Wants Out. After a 2000 performance at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas, he signed a recording contract and released the albums Room for Squares (2001) and Heavier Things (2003).

Mayer next pursued his interest in the blues, forming the John Mayer Trio, and also collaborating with rappers Common and Kanye West. Continuum (2006) earned a Grammy for best pop vocal album and reached number two on the Billboard pop chart. Mayer continued to be a Grammy favourite in 2009, awarded best male pop vocal performance (for the single “Say” from Continuum) and best solo rock performance (for “Gravity,” from the 2008 live album Where the Light Is).
