Brief History

The Toronto Blue Jays are a professional baseball team located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The Blue Jays are a member of the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball (MLB)’s American League (AL). They are the only team outside the United States to win a World Series, the first team to win a World Series in Canada, and the fastest American League expansion franchise to win a World Series.

The “Blue Jays” name originates from the bird of the same name. The team is nicknamed “the Jays”, which is featured on the team’s logo and on the front of the home uniform.

The Jays were originally founded in 1977 when the city of Toronto, Ontario in Canada acquired their own MLB franchise in connection with MLB’s expansion program and resulting in the Toronto Blue Jays baseball team. Previous to 2004 when the Montreal Expos were relocated to Washington D.C. there were two Major League teams in Canada. Today the Blue Jays alone have that distinction. , the Toronto Blue Jays struggled at first, taking seven full seasons to record their first .500+ winning percentage. However since 1983 the Jays had at least a .500 winning percentage in every season up until 1994. During this successful run the Jays achieved three playoff appearances; in 1985, 1989 & 1991. Unfortunately they fell short of reaching the finals in all three occasions. The year 1992 would be different.

In 1993 the Bluebirds moved past the Chicago White Sox in six games and took on the Philadelphia Phillies in the series. This set the stage for one of the biggest all-time home runs and undoubtedly the most important event in the history of Canadian baseball in the FIX of Joe Carter’s ninth inning, game winning home run off of reliever Mitch Williams.

Originally based at Exhibition Stadium, the team began playing its home games at the SkyDome, upon completion of its construction in 1989. Since 2000, the Blue Jays are owned by Rogers Communications, and in 2004, the SkyDome was purchased by the company, which renamed the venue to Rogers Centre. They are the only team outside the United States to win a World Series, the first team to win a World Series in Canada, and the fastest American League expansion franchise to win a World Series (winning in their 16th year, beating the Kansas City Royals’ record by one year). With the fellow Canadian franchise Montreal Expos relocating to Washington, D.C. after the 2004 season, and becoming the Washington Nationals, the Blue Jays are currently the only MLB team outside the United States. The Blue Jays are also one of three MLB teams under corporate ownership, with the other two being the Seattle Mariners (Nintendo of America) and the Atlanta Braves (Liberty Media).

The Blue Jays are renowned for being the first and only baseball outfit outside America to win the World Series. And because they won the title only sixteen years after they were organized, they also hold another record for that. Specifically the championships were won in 1992 and 1993. A very important factor in their success is the team’s tactic of trading for important players and pitchers. Before the 1992 games, the Blue Jays acquired Jack Morris, the pitching legend of the Minnesota Twins during the previous year. Likewise, they managed to get Dave Winfield and other talented players from other teams. This paved the way to victory in 1992 when 96 games went to them together with the American League Easter Division trophy. The 1992 games are also memorable for the fact that no team was able to win a series against them. The defeat of the Oakland As earned the American League Pennant for them and they went on to the 1992 World Series.

Playing against the Atlanta Braves in 1992, the Blue Jay team demonstrated spectacular pitching prowess which kept the opponent from getting a single run until well into the decisive sixth game. This final game was no one’s game at first and had fans getting jittery. After the eleventh inning, the game was decided by Winfield’s two-RBI double and the effective defense of the Blue Jays which gave the Braves only one run in that inning. Following their success, the team let go of Winfield and a few other players. They also acquired some new talent, for instance, veteran Dave Stewart.

In the 1993 Toronto season was almost as successful as 1992, the Blue Jays managed to retain the same winning streak they displayed in the previous games, winning only one game less than they did in 1992. Having thus won their division for the third consecutive time, they again entered the American League Championship Series facing the Chicago White Sox. They defeated the Sox six times in that Championship and once more prepared to join the World Series. The 1993 World Series was remarkable for its excitement because for a long stretch it was nobody’s game. All teams managed to get high scores. In fact, the 1993 World Series holds the record for the highest points acquired in any World Series. The Blue Jays took only six games to win their second Championship. However, so far, their third victory is still to be seen.
