Brief History
The Arizona Diamondbacks are a professional baseball team based in Phoenix, Arizona. They are a member of both the Major League Baseball’s National League Western Division and the National League itself. The Diamondbacks have one World Series title which they won in 2001, becoming the fastest team in the majors to win a championship.

The Arizona Diamondbacks along with Tampa Bay Devil Rays joined the National League as an expansion team in 1998. The name “Diamondback”, inspired by the Western diamondback snake, was chosen among thousands of entries that were received from a contest to name the team. They are popularly referred as the D-Backs or the Snakes. From 1998 to the present, they have played in Chase Field (formerly Bank One Ballpark).

The Diamondbacks won three division championships (1999, 2001, & 2002) and one World Series in their five years of survival. Just in their second season in 1999, the Snakes won 100 games and won the National League West division. In 2001, after beating the cardinals in NLDS and Atlanta Braves in NLCS, they reached the World Series and became the youngest expansion club to win a world series Championship by defeating reigning champs, the New York Yankees. During this time the team was headed by two excellent baseball pitchers, Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling. On November 7, 2001 around 30,000 fans rejoiced the Diamondbacks winning carnival at Bank One Ballpark. This was the first major professional sports championship for the team and also the first for the state of Arizona.

In the 2002 baseball season, Arizona made it back to the National League Division Series, but lost to the St. Louis Cardinals. In the following four seasons, the Diamondbacks didn’t make it into the playoffs. They would, however, win their division in 2007, but only to lose to the Colorado Rockies in the National League Championship Series. The following season, the Diamondbacks just missed the playoffs, after the National League West was won by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

In 2008 the Diamondbacks finished the season with a record of 82–80 (good for second in the NL West). The 2009 season ended with the Diamondbacks in last place.
