Brief History

The Los Angeles Dodgers are a professional baseball team based in Los Angeles, California. The team is in the Western Division of the National League. The Dodgers have won more National League pennants (21) than any team in history, with ten West division titles, and two Wild Card appearances. They have appeared in 18 World Series, more than any other National League team, and have won six times.

Established in 1883 in Brooklyn, New York, the team began playing in 1884 as the Brooklyn Atlantics. The team was known by a number of nicknames (including Bridegrooms, Grooms, Superbas, Robins, and Trolley Dodgers) before becoming the Brooklyn Dodgers by the 1932 season. In 1889 they won the American Association pennant. Switching to the National League in 1890, the team won the National League Championship their first year in the League and the Dodgers became the only club in Major League Baseball history to win successive pennants in different leagues in successive years.

In Brooklyn, the Dodgers won the NL pennant several times (1890, 1899, 1900, 1916, 1920, 1941, 1947, 1949, 1952, 1953, 1955 1956) and the World Series in 1955.

The team eventually became Los Angeles Dodgers in 1958. The Dodgers in Los Angeles won nine more National League Championships and five World Series rings. After moving to Los Angeles, the team won World Series championships in 1959, 1963, 1965, 1981, 1988. Altogether, the Dodgers have appeared in 18 World Series.
