The Cleveland team originated in 1900 as the Lake Shores, when the American League was officially a minor league. One of the American League’s eight charter franchises, the major league incarnation of the club was founded in Cleveland in 1901. Originally called the Cleveland Blues, the team played in League Park until moving permanently to Cleveland Municipal Stadium in 1946. The Indians first star was Napoleon Lajoie, one of the greatest hitters in history. Lajoie came to the Indians in 1902 from Philadelphia, and although he hit a robust .368, it representing a fifty-four point drop in his batting average from the previous season, when he hit an American League record .422. Many other notable players have played for the Indians, including Stan Coveleski, Bob Feller, Nap Lajoie, Bob Lemon, Satchel Paige, Gaylord Perry, Frank Robinson, Tris Speaker, and Cy Young.

The “Indians” name originates from a request by the club owner to decide on a new name, following the 1914 season. In reference to the Boston Braves (now the Atlanta Braves), the media chose “the Indians”. They are nicknamed “the Tribe” and “the Wahoos”. The latter is a reference to the mascot which appears in the team’s logos, Chief Wahoo.

During the 1990s Cleveland won five consecutive division titles (1995-1999). However, the club lost the World titles twice in 1995 to the Atlanta Braves and 1999 to the Florida Marlins. In June of 2005 the Indians began a 9-game winning streak, going over .500 for good. However, the season came to a heartbreaking end as the Indians went on to lose six of their last seven games, five of them by one run, and missed the playoffs by only two games. In 1997 the team again topped the division.
