Brief History

The Florida Marlins are a professional baseball team based in Miami, Florida. They are one of five teams in the East Division of Major League Baseball’s National League. Established in 1993 as an expansion franchise, the Marlins have been highly successful – winning the World Series in 1997 and 2003. They are the only team to date to have won all of their postseason series.

Much of the Marlin’s success was under Jack McKeon who led the Marlins to three winning seasons in a row. In 1997, the Florida Marlins led by new manager Jim Leyland won the wild card, finishing 92-70. The Marlins have however never won first place in their division, advancing to the playoffs both times as the National League Wild Card winner.

In the 1997 World Series, the Florida Marlins faced the Cleveland Indians and won in seven games. With an amazing extra-inning single by shortstop Edgar Renteria off of Cleveland pitcher Charles Nagy, this barely cleared his glove, scoring Craig Counsell to win game. The Marlins record slumped to 54-108 the following season, making them the first club ever to win a World Series and then lose more than 100 games during the following season.

The Marlins play their home games at Sun Life Stadium, also home to the Miami Dolphins and the University of Miami football team.

In recent years, the Marlins ownership pushed for a new stadium and recently agreed to a plan with Miami-Dade County commissioners and the city of Miami to build a $515 million ballpark on the site where the legendary Miami Orange Bowl once stood. As part of the deal, the Marlins will, when their new ballpark opens in 2012, be known as the “Miami Marlins.”

The Marlins name originates from the fish species, and from Miami’s former minor league team of the same name. The team is nicknamed “The Fish”.
