The Padres were founded in 1969, and twenty-three thousand fans attended their welcoming ceremony into the National League that year. It almost took a decade for the team to post a winning record – however in 1984, under manager Dick Williams and with star players including Steve Garvey, Graig Nettles and Rich Gossage, as well as former San Diego State University baseball and basketball star Tony Gwynn, the Padres won their first National League West championship.

The Padres have won the National League Pennant twice, in 1984 and 1998, losing in the World Series both times however. The Padres are one of three teams to never have a pitcher toss a no-hit game, and are one of just two teams to have never had a player ‘hit for the cycle’.

In 1996 under president Larry Lucchino, and with a team administered by former Padre catcher Bruce Bochy and star player Gwynn, who won his seventh National League batting championship, National League MVP Ken Caminiti, leading hitter Rickey Henderson, pitcher Fernando Valenzuela, first baseman Wally Joyner and outfielder Steve Finley, the Padres won the National League West championship in a stirring competition, sweeping the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium in the final series of the regular season.
