Brief History

The Minnesota Twins are a professional baseball team based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and play in the Central Division of Major League Baseball’s American League. The club has won 3 World Series championships (1924, 1987, and 1991) and has fielded 17 American League batting champions.

One of the American League’s eight charter franchises, the club was founded in Washington, D.C. in 1901 as the Washington Senators or Washington Nationals. Although the Washington team endured long bouts of mediocrity, they had a period of prolonged success in the 1920s and 1930s, led by Hall-of-Famers Bucky Harris, Goose Goslin, Sam Rice, Joe Cronin, and above all Walter Johnson.

In 1960, Major League Baseball granted the city of Minneapolis an expansion team. However the Washington Nationals requested that they be allowed to move to Minneapolis, and the expansion team be granted to Washington instead. The league granted his request, and the team moved to Bloomington, Minnesota after the 1960 season, while Washington fielded a brand new “Washington Senators” (which also would eventually move, becoming the Texas Rangers prior to the 1972 season).

Success came quickly to the team in Minnesota. Harmon Killebrew, who had already been a young star in Washington, was joined by Tony Oliva and Zoilo Versalles and later Rod Carew, enjoying significant success through the 1960s and early 1970s, though not winning a championship. Collecting pitching talent like Camilo Pascual, Jim Kaat, Jim Perry and “Mudcat” Grant over the next few years turned them into champions. The Twins won the 1965 pennant as Oliva led the league again at .321 (the only player to win batting titles his first two seasons) and Versailles had an MVP year. Ironically, the Twins clinched the flag with a 2-1 win over the new Washington Senators. The Twins bowed to the Dodgers in a pitching-rich seven game Series. In 1969 the Twins won the first American League West Pennant.

A second wave of success came in the late 1980s and early 1990s, led by Kent Hrbek, Bert Blyleven, and Kirby Puckett, winning the franchise’s second and third World Series (and first in Minnesota). A new generation of sluggers – Kent Hrbek (thirty four home runs & ninety runs batted in), Kirby Puckett (.332, twenty-eight home runs & ninety-nine runs batted in) and Gary Gaetti (thirty-one home runs & one-hundred nine runs batted in), brought the Twin Cities back to the World Series and a seven game triumph over the Cardinals in 1987. Four years later, they repeated behind a veteran pitching staff led by Scott Erickson’s 20-8 record and Jack Morris’ eighteen wins. Morris turned in a Series performance for the ages in Game Seven, shutting out the Braves on seven hits for ten innings until his team scored in the bottom of the tenth for a 1-0 win.

The Minnesota Twins are named after the Twin Cities area of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota. They played in Metropolitan Stadium from 1961 to 1981, the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome from 1982 to 2009, and played their first game at Target Field on April 12, 2010.
